Timber Rattlesnakes

Treatened in some parts of IA and Species of Special Concern in other parts.

People need to stop purposely running over Timber Rattlesnakes. I have seen to many DOR's this year (26 AOR's 7 DOR's in 06 season) First, they are protected by law, and secondly it's wrong. To many rednecks out there thinking they are doing the world a favor, in reality they they are killing a very important keystone species. Although the population is doing well in certain counties, new housing developements are popping up on scenic bluffs all over the county. Which will threaten them. Timbers use the same densite for life, and if that den is destroyed, they will succumb to freezing weather and die. If you have one in your yard, just leave it alone. Make sure that your yard is kept clean and void of any areas that would attract mice. Most timbers are very docile, when approached they remain montionless and rarely rattle. But if stepped on or harrassed they can bite. So just leave them alone.
