Northern Red-bellied Snake

Status Unknown

Their are scattern pops in Northern and Northeast IA. Also, one iso pop in SW IA in E. Fremont County. Any signings especially in SW IA would be appreciated.

Northern Prairie Skink

Status Unknown

Found in isolated pockets Central, Western, NC and NW Iowa. Favor sandy or loose soil in a grassland habitat. Look for them a few days after a prairie burn in the spring. Focus on any rocky areas. In Central and NC IA, they like to use the rock piles (glacial erratics) that farmers gather from their filed and put them in a pile.

Slender Glass Lizard

Rare

Found in isolated pockets in SC and SE Iowa. Sightings would be appreciated.

Speckled Kingsnake

RARE

Found in the Southern 1/3 of Iowa. I'm unaware of any meta-pops. Any info regarding populations would be very important.

Diary

My personal records

Foxsnakes

Common

Fox Snakes are one of the most common snakes in the State. They are almost always confused with the Threatened Bullsnake. They can be found just about anywhere, but seem to favor marshy areas surrounded by timber. They are one of the few constrictors that are common on the Des Moines Lobe area of IA. In South Central Iowa, Fox Snakes seem to be repaced by the Praire Kingsnake around the Hwy 34 Corridor and therefore are not as common. But from what I have seen, that is the only part of the state that this occurs.

Smooth Greensnake's

Up until this year I have only seen Smooth Greensnakes in the Southern half of Dallas County, but I have talked to some people in Northern Dallas County who has seen them this year. So it's safe to say that their are population's County wide.

Snake Sighting Reports

Please give snake name, detailed location, time of day, gps coords and any other data you wish.

Note- this sight is not to be used for snake collecting purposes, only data and picture's. I do not condone snake collecting, unless it is for research only. Please practice "catch and release", and do not relocate unless site is going to be developed.

Black Ratsnakes

Threatened?

I'm trying to map the distribution of Black Ratsnakes in Iowa, so if anyone has any info regarding these, reclusive snakes, please post.
Note-I'm not in the snake collecting business, I'm out their to to put together data on where these snakes and all snakes are.

Bullsnake Sightings

Species of Special Concern or Endangered

Any reports of Bullsnake (not Foxsnakes) sightings would be appreciated. We need to know if the whole state's population is declining or is it just in Central Iowa. Please give detailed location description or gps coords.

Timber Rattlesnakes

Treatened in some parts of IA and Species of Special Concern in other parts.

People need to stop purposely running over Timber Rattlesnakes. I have seen to many DOR's this year (26 AOR's 7 DOR's in 06 season) First, they are protected by law, and secondly it's wrong. To many rednecks out there thinking they are doing the world a favor, in reality they they are killing a very important keystone species. Although the population is doing well in certain counties, new housing developements are popping up on scenic bluffs all over the county. Which will threaten them. Timbers use the same densite for life, and if that den is destroyed, they will succumb to freezing weather and die. If you have one in your yard, just leave it alone. Make sure that your yard is kept clean and void of any areas that would attract mice. Most timbers are very docile, when approached they remain montionless and rarely rattle. But if stepped on or harrassed they can bite. So just leave them alone.
